to IRC (many aren't)

You do need a special client, unless you're using Mozilla, in which case
irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/foaf in the browser should work.

Xchat's probably the best one I've come across.

It's really worth giving it a go for those who haven't been along to the
channel. IRc isn't perfect, but it's a lot more conversational than
mailing lists or blogging.
