Thanks for pointing it out, Jon. 
Is <foaf:mbox>mailto:alteree at beat.the.foam</foaf:mbox> invalid then?
I was misled by the fact that no foaf validator i tried screamed it's wrong...
I tried FOAF Lint for example. It also worked fine in FOAF Explorer...
