In input boxes like this one should allow people to put URIs that indirectly point to foaf documents, and follow through as much as possible. Users will not know the difference between foaf documents, foaf people, etc...

If a foaf document does not have a primary topic, or if it points to a file that points to a number of foaf files, one should ask the user which person he really is by presenting a list of possible users he could be.

I did this with http://test.foaf-ssl.net/cert/ (though in most other respects the user interface is horrible).
